Just as when a quick thought darts through the heart

of a man when cares crowd in on him

45 and toss him about or when bright glances spin

off the eyes – just like that –

glorious Hermes devised word and deed together.

He measured and cut stalks of reed

and fixed them in, he pierced through the back,

through the shell of the tortoise.

Inspired, he stretched oxhide over the shell,

put in the horns and fitted the crosspiece

50 over the two of them and stretched out

seven harmonious strings of sheep-gut.
